When I said that the books mostly hold up, I meant that there are a few wince-inducing moments (the pigtail-pulling scenes, and a chapter in the second book that relies on dubious language and Wacky Foreigner stereotypes), but I still think that the good outweighs the bad. The series is very similar to Gravity Falls in is "yeah, sometimes weird things Just Happen here" approach.
