"Life is your creation."
Aug. 9th, 2023 07:27 amI have now seen Barbie The Movie twice, once with a group organized by
thedromeda, and once with
we, who couldn't make it to the first outing. I made sure to choose ultra-colorful outfits both times.
I loved the movie's aesthetics, all the performances, a lot of the humor (I'll mention some exceptions in a moment), our leading lady's journey of self-actualization, and Gerwig & co.'s attempts to both interrogate and reaffirm Barbie's cultural importance. Obviously, different viewers have had - and will continue to have - different opinions on whether those attempts were successful.
As much as anything we saw onscreen, if not more, I loved seeing the moviegoers - across all ages and a spectrum of gender expressions - dressed up for the event. When my friend and I were looking for our theater, I suggested that we "follow the wave of pink!"
( This Barbie has more detailed thoughts, positive and negative, which are full of spoilers! )
