I shared this elevator pitch* for the Hypnotists trilogy with an acquaintance on Discord, and now I'm sharing it with you.

The first book is about a Plucky Youth who ends up attending an After-School Club for Teens With Mind Control Powers and consequently becomes caught up in a political conspiracy, and the two sequels are about the fallout from his involvement. Some aspects of the plot and world-building make me very grumpy, but the interpersonal story beats are really well done, and the villain is one of my very favorites that I've ever encountered in any children's book, ever. I love stories about mind control and this series gives me so much of what I want.

If anybody wants to know what I've said about my latest obsession over on Tumblr, I've written about (among other things) my shipping preferences, ideas for an epistolary fic that follows the events of all three books, and what I'd like to see from a hypothetical screen adaptation.

*I told [personal profile] anysin that "pitch" made it sound like I was claiming some kind of ownership over this series, which I most certainly am not, and that led us into a tangent about old-school fic disclaimers: "These characters belong to Gordon Korman, please don't sue me, LOL!"

Title: Faces in the Window
Fandom: The Hypnotists Series - Gordon Korman
Characters: Felicity Green, Jackson Opus, Original Characters (Others Mentioned)
Words: 2,482
Rating: General Audiences
Summary: Felicity is determined to find out as much as she can about the new boy in town, even if it means risking her friendships, her memories, and her safety.
Additional Tags: Missing Scene, POV Outsider, Hypnotism, Memory Loss
Notes: If you're reading this fic without reading the source material, it might be helpful to know that "Jack Magnus" is the name that Our Hero Jax assumes when he and his family are hiding from the series villain in the trilogy's second installment. I assume that it's a play on "Magnum Opus," but one would be forgiven for thinking of The Magnus Archives when one sees the name. Also, I am blowing extra virtual kisses at anyone who chooses to read this fic, especially if you haven't read the source material, and baking you virtual cookies.

I've been flinging passages from the Hypnotists series at [personal profile] anysin, mostly out of narrative order, as I identify which ones are most likely to make us smirk, chortle, or flail at the Impeccable Sketchy Mentor Vibes. And at one point, I shared this description of said Sketchy Mentor:

Dr. Elias Mako was taller than he looked in the pictures, and a lot more imposing. His heavy brows acted as a frame for black, piercing eyes, and his shock of dark wavy hair was accented by twin silver wings at the temples.

And Anysin said they were "imagining Adrian Pasdar for some reason."

And I nearly fell over because PERFECT FANCAST IS PERFECT.

The "pictures," by the way, are photos of Mako posing with a fleet of famous people, which can be found pretty much throughout his Mind Control Research Headquarters. If we ever do get that completely hypothetical (yes, I almost typed "hypnothetical") movie or TV adaptation, I want a scene like these ones.

I spent actual human brain cells on the designation of a DW tag for posts about the Hypnotists trilogy. The quote that became my subject line was another candidate, as was "the innate ability to penetrate and influence." (All of which are taken from the resident Sketchy Mentor's dialogue. He really is like that all the time.)

The bad news is that the AO3 category for this series contains - at the time of this post - a grand total of 7 fanworks, and 4 of them are mine. The good news (for me, at least) is that I wrote almost 9000 words of fic in March and April, which - especially since I spent most of last year in a profound creative slump - is still kind of difficult for me to believe.
