There's some really good stuff in Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. I found the history-of-philosophy parts interesting but sometimes hard to read through, but the story itself has some great meta/fictionality themes that actually gave me chills when I read it back in high school and still didn't know that anyone else in the world talks to fictional characters.
I've run across some good things in TV and movies, too. There's an episode of The Twilight Zone where a writer can bring characters to life by describing them into a tape recorder. And Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends celebrates the importance of imaginary friends, and helped me come to terms with having headmates (and is really funny and charming in general).
