Title: Strength
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Characters: Dawn and Buffy

"It's not like I just woke up one morning and realized that I could snap demons' necks with my little finger," Buffy explains after their first training session. "I had to learn these moves, too. And I didn't spend any time worrying about messing up my hair or breaking my nails -" She pauses. "Okay, fine, I did. But I got over myself."

"But you had - have - Slayer strength," Dawn protests. She's grubby and sweaty and tired, and looking forward to a shower and a glass of water the second that they get home. She might not even take her clothes off first. "Didn't that give you an edge?"

"An edge, yeah. Instant ass-kickery, no. I had to learn to channel it. A stake is just a piece of wood until you know where to aim it and when, and strength -"

" - is just raw power until you put it through the Mystical Rock-Tumbler of Incredible Muscle Pain and Boring Lectures," Dawn finishes, rolling her eyes.

Her sister glares. "Don't blame me if you were expecting a training montage."

"Kinda got my first clue when there was no inspirational music at my first punch. It's just that you make it look so..." Dawn stops and holds up her hands in surrender. "I almost said 'easy.' I know it's not."

Buffy touches her hair. "I know you know."

"I know you know I... okay. Stopping now."

"And I promise I'll lay off the cheesy platitudes after this, there's more than one kind of strength, and only one way to learn it."

Dawn hears six years of pain and death and loss in those words, and wonders what surviving that particular lesson will cost them.

Title: Wild
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Wishverse)
Characters: Oz and Willow

It takes one evening, when Oz is out past curfew, to teach him his place in Sunnydale. He stayed later in the cemetery than usual, today being what it is, and Aunt Maureen lives across town. Sunset finds him walking as fast as he can along Main Street, trying not to look like he's running from anything, although they'd still know that he was prey. They can always smell it.

At least the full moon cycle is over. If it weren't, he'd have gone straight home from school, do not pass Go, and locked himself in the basement without a word or a backward glance, anniversary or not.

One of the vamps is leaning against the boarded-up window of the bookstore. He's not sure - they didn't exactly run in the same circles, and she's decked out this evening in leather pants and a matching bustier - but he thinks that she remembers seeing her around school, scuttling from one class to another in her plaid jumper with her books clutched tightly to her chest. Whatever protection she thought that they gave her, it wasn't enough.

She smiles, lips as red as her hair curling back from very white teeth, and takes a step toward him. "Hello, little boy. Living dangerously?"

Oz slips a hand into his pocket, tightens it around the wooden cross.

The redhead sniffs the air around him. "I remember you. The beast got out of his cage and ran wild, and your scent doesn't lie." Sniffs again. "You're not one of them," she sneers. "Why do you choose to be prey?"

He tries to steady his voice. "I don't want any trouble."

"Then you're living in the wrong town."

"I know." Fear makes him stupid. And honest. It's not like he'd be here if he had anywhere else to go, he tells himself, and until the next time his cousin tugs at his sleeve or Aunt Maureen looks at him as if she can still see her brother in his face, he believes it.

"I should turn you just for -" But he's brought up the cross, and almost believes, too, that she's backed off for that reason and not because she sees him as just as much of a monster as she is.
