I’ve been trying to navigate a lot of brain-weasels related to fandom and to my overall Responsibility To The World (separately and in conjunction), and while I’m not saying that I won’t post about those feelings at some point, I also want to talk about a recurring source of fannish joy.

Since I started listening to This Week in Fandom History, I’ve been compiling a list of subjects that I would like the podcast to cover at some point in the future. Although the hosts do take suggestions via their tumblr, I haven’t requested any of these topics yet (and might never request some of them). I’m also leaving out things like the MsScribe Story and My Immortal, because they’ve implied that they’ll cover those at some point.

In no particular order, here are some things that I'd like to hear them discuss:

  • Any event in the entire run of Torchwood, from its 2006 premiere, to the establishment of a rare (for the time) example of an M/M couple in a widely released science fiction show, to the Children of Earth miniseries that understandably received backlash for permanently killing off one half of that couple. The recent TWIFH episode on the Doctor Who revival did mention Jack Harkness and Torchwood a couple of times, but I think there’s a lot more potential for discussion there: not just about The Boyfriends, but also about fandom’s attitude toward the main female character, and the other shows (besides Doctor Who) that influenced Torchwood’s storylines and style as it tried to find its own voice, and probably several other things that I can’t think of right now.

  • The waxing and waning of the X-Men movie fandom, which was reasonably active in the early 2000s but exploded in popularity with the release of X-Men: First Class in 2011 (and the introduction of two young, attractive white actors as Charles and Erik – yes, I shipped them too). This is the topic that I am most likely to actually suggest.

  • The transition of After from One Direction self-insert fanfiction to mainstream-published bestselling series with a movie adaptation. I know that other podcasts have reviewed that book – I liked the critiques by The Worst Bestsellers and Hazel and Katniss and Harry and Starr – but one of the hosts of TWIFH was actually in the One Direction fandom, and even though I absolutely was not, I’ve enjoyed hearing her talk about some of her experiences, so I think I’d enjoy hearing her talk about this, too.

  • The publication of Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl, subsequent YA novels about the fandom experience, and trends within that particular subgenre.

  • Cipher Hunt and the overall dynamic between Alex Hirsch and the Gravity Falls fandom.

  • My fellow Fandom Olds, what are some events from fannish history (whether you lived through them or just heard about them) that you wish more people talked or knew about?
