The first X-Men movie and X-Men: Evolution both turn 25 this year. Both adaptations continue to mean a lot to me, and I intend to devote at least one Throwback Thursday post to each of them; I’ve certainly accumulated enough relevant handwritten material over the years.
Even though I’m not currently confident in my ability to commit to an ongoing creative project with a self-imposed deadline, I also love the idea of completing my sequel to Ordinary Town by the anniversary of XME’s premiere in November. As I’ve said previously, a lot of what I originally planned for that story (insomuch as I planned anything at all during the frenzy of NaNoWriMo ten years ago) will obviously be cut or modified, but I still think I’d enjoy writing about what my main character was up to during “Growing Pains” (the season premiere, to which I returned again and again when thinking and writing about mutant-human relationships on this show), “Shadow Dance” (Amanda’s first actual onscreen appearance) and “Day of Reckoning” (the season finale, which shifted the status quo in ways that would affect her directly). I didn’t even realize that Amanda and Trish’s troubled friendship needed to be the emotional throughline of Ordinary Town until well into the revision and posting process; if other creative surprises await in a potential follow-up, the only way to unearth them is to actually write it.
I also found out recently that one of my close fandom friends hasn’t seen the early X-Men movies, so a long-distance viewing (like we’re currently doing with Young Justice) is probably in our future. I’d also love to show them XME at some point, since I think that – like me – they’d find a lot to love and a lot to criticize.
