This week, I’m writing about five of my favorite shared headcanons/fanon across five different fandoms (listed in the order in which I discovered them). They vary in popularity, but I certainly didn’t come up with any of them on my own. Also, a couple of these ideas were later proven to be canon, but a noticeable number of people speculated that they might be true before that point.

Spoilers for The Magnus Archives, in particular, lie within.

1. Charles and Erik ran the School For Gifted Youngsters together before Erik became disillusioned and started his path to becoming Magneto (X-Men Movies)

No matter how much I disliked X-Men: The Last Stand, the scene in which those two showed up at Jean’s house to recruit her was one of my favorites, and confirmed what a lot of fans had already assumed about their history. X-Men: First Class offered a different take on the idea of Charles and Erik working together to train young mutants, before the mansion could necessarily be called a school. (One has to handwave pretty hard in order to make the two scenes fit together narratively; movieverse continuity is kind of a mess even before we consider the diverging timelines in Days of Future Past.)

2. The Avengers moved into Tony Stark’s tower after battling Loki in New York, and became a Superhero Found Family (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

The MCU didn’t ultimately do much with this premise, and I’ve seen some contemporary Tumblr users present it as an example of how “cringe” 2012 fandom was. I choose not to listen to those people. Cringe is fake and Superhero Found Families are awesome.

3. Fiddleford often interacted with Bill Cipher in Ford’s body while they were working together, and was Not Happy To See Him (Gravity Falls)

Nothing in the show contradicts this scenario, but Journal 3 seems to suggest that it wasn’t the case (although the existence of Fiddleford’s memory gun leaves some room for interpretation). Still, I loved any and all fanfic in which Bill and Fidds had a chance to play off each other.

4. Duke Roger magically mind-controlled his squire at least once, so that Alex attacked Alanna during what was supposed to be a friendly sparring match (Song of the Lioness quartet)

The Tortall books have a relatively small fandom, so this is a proportionally small headcanon, but it had turned up a few times before I got there (and if another reader hadn’t suggested it on a podcast, I probably wouldn’t have ended up writing fic about Alex and Roger at all).

5. Elias Bouchard is a vessel for Jonah Magnus (The Magnus Archives)

The end of Season 4 confirmed this to be completely true, after a truly impressive buildup of foreshadowing. The creators have affirmed that they were happy that so many fans figured it out ahead of time, since it meant that they were doing their jobs right. (I also enjoyed fic and speculation about Jon, Martin, or Tim as Jonah's next vessel, although none of those things ended up happening.)
